Books:

  1. The Blue Stallion (yes, Blue...not Black Stallion and not Blue Roan or Blue Mustang. It's an old paperback book from my childhood with a picture of blue stallion rearing on the front...it was about a boy going out west to find his father after his mother dies...he finds him with a new family, he also finds a blue wild mustang stallion and has to fight bad ranchers in order to save the animal.)
  2. Don't remember title, but even more obtuse. About a young orphan boy around the 1930s, and his dog, who leave the city to head to the country --Vermont I think-- to find the boy's mother's house. He gets adopted by a neighbor couple who take him in, and together he and his adoptive father save the house his mother's family left her by racing a horse, a trotter, in some local race to earn the money to pay the back taxes. It's a great story. THe final race was set in the winter...and covers his growing up from small boy into young man (teenager maybe.)
