Abstract:

This goal of this project focused on developing a new image based rendering technique for constructing a high quality real-time preview of a lighting environment for a 3d model or scene of arbitrary geometric and luminary detail.

This particular technique utilizes a view-dependent light field composed of an array of samples, or rendered images, generated from a fixed camera position, representing a single, pure light source at a discrete location in space.

By blending between multiple samples contained within the light field, an image representing a virtual light source at an arbitrary position could be reconstructed.

An overview of the design and implementation of a production oriented prototype application which utilizes the described technique and achieves real-time performance on an SGI O2 R10k MIPS 512MB workstation running SGI Irix 6.5.x is described in the corresponding documentation.
