Welcome to IB - inorganic
chemistry 2005/06 with Mr. Steidl
This website is designed as a resource for students and parents.
Lesson plans (often containing assignments and handouts), extra credit
opportunities, HW solutions (not always), test dates etc will be posted
on this site. If you miss class for any reason, it is your
responsibility to find out what you missed.
DISCLAIMER:
The lesson plans are primarily written for ME and often a lot of extra
explanation, examples and clarification is given in class.
Those plans are NOT intended to replace taking notes in class. They are
not intended to even make sense to you without further explanation.
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.
I try to have this website updated at least every other day, but no
promises.

Grades are online now.
Results of final: There were two kinds of people taking this test:
those who did well and those who did not.
Even after grading on a curve the results were not pretty. Below is the
grade break-down with # of students
for each grade in [ ].
0-40% F [8] 40-50% D [0]
50 - 60% C [4] 60-80 % B [7] 80 -
100% A [2]
Of those who recieved an F, 3 are juniors, 5 are seniors.
I did show the final to Mr. Kvamme (if parents read this, he was the IB
teacher for the organic chem. course
last year) and his comment was: "That's what we teach them. They should
know that."
If you want to pick up your final, come by my office and I'll hand it
out to you (Juniors, I'll see you in class on Thursday).

Answer key to most question (those I gave you). There are a few
additional questions on this answer key,
and some questions were changed a little. If your answer does not
match, read the question in the answer key
to see if the question has changed. The numbering of the questions on
page 2 and 3 has changed.

Several students wanted to know why I will not be teaching at EWHS next
year. Here's the answer.

June 1 New
problems, due June 5th, are found on page 7 and below, here.
(FYI, PIB chem. students need to do page 3-5)
Extra credit announcement: due to
multiple requests I am adding the movie "An Inconvenient Truth"
as another option (instead of a lecture at the
UW). Same write-up deal as with the lecture. Staple your movie
ticket stub to the paper as proof of attendance.
You can still go to a UW lecture for extra credit, but the extra
credit is "either lecture or movie", not "both"!

Progress report comments: I gave
students the option to chose some of their own comments.
I did change some if I felt it was necessary. However, I did NOT change
the obviously wrong ones,
like "fails to suit up for gym class".

Extra Credit opportunity (up to 10 test points) :
Attend ANY ONE science related lecture at the Univ. of Washington
and write
a ~ 200 word paper.
About 100 words summary and 100 words response.
Make sure you write the name of the lecture, and the date of the
lecture on your paper.
Use this template for your write-up.
This time I let you chose your own topic. Go to any UW
department website and look for events / seminars / lectures.
One place to start is the Program
on the Environment calendar.
Town Hall
Seattle Science Lectures [Downtown, co-sponsored by the UW, $ 5 :( ]
(warning: departmental seminars (e.g. analytical chemistry seminar,
chemical oceanography seminar, etc.)
are intended for graduate students in that field and can be very
difficult to understand)
Science related lectures at other places (Seattle U,
SPU, etc.) are ok as well. If in doubt ask me.
Deadline for turning in EC papers: June 8th
I'd like to remind you about the academic honesty policy at this point.
Do not risk a loss of credit for 10 points!!!

I may or may not be here ... have
an appointment with Homeland Security as
part of my Green Card application process at 10:00 am downtown. It's a

keep
me and deport me ....
In that case: It's been a pleasure. Hard times will be ahead. For you.
