Run Mt Si!
due to the fact that the DNR and WTA have trail work parties on the
Mt Si trail EVERY Saturday and Sunday in 2004 and 2005, I decided to
not have the race this year as to not draw the attention of the DNR to
this race. I may organize a race up Mailbox Peak in August. Mailbox peak is the east of North Bend, the first mountain you see as you look from Mt Si towards Snoqualmie Pass. It is even steeper than Si in some parts...
Check back at the end of July....
The trailhead of Mailbox peak is a few miles north of the North Bend Truck stop exit, up the Snoqualmie Middle fork road (Lake Dorothy road), just where the road turns into a gravel road. There are several parking spaces. The first 1/2 mile is up a logging road through a clearcut. Just as you enter the forest the trail goes off to the left, beginning a relentless climb to the summit. Rewards: Views of Rainier and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.  And yes, there is a mailbox on the summit.

Recap and results of last year's race (2003)

The 2004  race will  take place..... check back later.
Date: TBA (on a Sunday)
Time: 9:00am (probably)
Start: Mt Si trailhead, North Bend
Finish: you have to touch the bottom of the "haystack", the 200ft summit rock of Mt Si
Length: 6.7 kilometers  (that is 4.2 miles for the metrically challenged)
Elevation gain: 1000m
Format: Mass start. Runners are lined up at the start according to their current estimated 10k time. This will minimize the passing on the trail. Please be honest. No one wins this race on the first mile. However, if you start too fast you might be done after a mile, but unfortunately for you, not finished.
Course: The course starts by the water fountain at the parking lot and follows the trail up to the bottom of the "haystack", the 200 ft tall rock at the top of Mt Si. The last about 400m are in the open, bouldery area of the mountain. Stay on the trail to the right (follow signs to summit haystack), run to the right past a 50ft tall rock (you run through ome trees there). Right after the rock is a sign that says "straight to haystack" and "left to viewpoint". Turn left at this point and head straight for the bottom of the the haystack. Touch the rock and you're finished!
ABSOLUTELY NO cutting of switchbacks! Why?
        1) It causes errosion and destroys the trail
        2) It's cheating
        3) Anyone seen cutting the trail will be DQed!
        4) We don't want to tick off our friends from the DNR
For those of you who don't know Mt Si, it's about 30 miles east of Seattle by North Bend. Check out a
Topomap of Mt Si for details. They show 2 different trails up Mt Si. It's the one further east where you cross a little creek right after the trail starts.
Directions:
From Seattle, take I 90 to North Bend, turn east (right) onto North Bend Way, turn north (left) onto Mt Si Road. The parking lot is on your left after about 2.4 miles (2.1 miles after the bridge).
Carpool: please carpool if possible. On a nice Sunday morning the parking lot fills up even without a race.
Signup: DOR only, after 8:00am
Entry fee: free, nothing, zero

Featured link: White River 50mile national trail running championships - Sat. July 31st 6:30am. Run it yourself or come watch some of the best trailrunners in the US. Can Redmond's William Emerson repeat his upset victory from 2001? Will 2002 winner Nate McDowell be back this year? Or will it finally be Seattle's Scott Jurek's day? How about Carl Anderson, Ian Torrence, Dave Mackey, Brandon Sybrowsky?  - Chad R. won't be back in 2004 because if he is I'll have to run it again - and then he'll drop out since he won't win!
On the women's side, will 2002 champ Ann Heaslett be back? What about Ann Trason, the 2001 winner and greatest US female ultrarunner in history? Nikki, defending champion and course recod holder would be the clear favorite if she runs. And watch out for Trisha Rosenberg. She was second last year in her first ever 50 miler....

Thanks to all who showed up this year and hopefully I'll see you on the trail again next year.
